Enamel is a layer of colored glass on top of a metal object. The glass is melted over the metal at a temperature of 800 - 900 °C. That way the metal becomes both attractively decorated and protected against rust at the same time.
Earlier enamel was the cheaper version of chinese porcelain. Today most of the enamelware factories are still to be found in China.
