Do I need to take my piercings out if I am having an X-ray or surgery?

In the first instance, whether you can or can't keep your piercing jewelry in during X-rays or surgery depends on where you are having surgery or X-rays. For example, if you are having X-rays or surgery on your face or head, you should remove the piercing jewelry that you have in your tongue, nose, lip, ears or other location in the area. This is because the jewelry may interfere with sub-optimal images and you risk having to repeat the entire examination or take multiple images. If it is a different part of the body than the head to be x-rayed then you can usually keep your piercing.

When should I take my piercing out and when can I keep it in?

It is possible to keep your healing jewelry if you have pierced yourself with us as we use titanium as healing jewelry.
In our piercing studios we only use titanium piercing jewelry ( Ti6AL-4V, ASTM F136 ) It is the same high quality used in Swedish healthcare. Titanium does not interfere with images, nor is it conductive or magnetic. But many doctors want you to take out the jewelry even if it is titanium.
You should always listen to your doctor or nurse's advice as they always know what is best for you❣
The easiest thing to do is to ask when you go for an X-ray. For surgery, you usually need to take out all your piercings!
Before the x-ray and surgery, we recommend that you change your piercing jewelry to medical bioplastic jewelry. This is to prevent the hole from contracting. A piercing can contract in just a few hours. If you don't put in a replacement piece of jewelry, you risk having to either stretch your piercing or redo it completely.
