Build your own Segebaden sledge

Now you can do as the Youtube profile Erik Grankvist and build your own sledding with Segebaden's original machines from the 1930s.

At Segebaden we have a vision. We want this fine craft, building wooden sledges by hand, to live on long after we have passed away. We therefore offer those who are interested to manufacture their own sledge.

I had the honor of supervising the Youtube-profile Erik Grankvist when he made his Segebaden sledge on his own. The machines we used in manufacturing are the same ones used in the 1930s. Talk about quality. We also use the same technology as then.

You can see Eriks film on Youtube 7 Days Hot Tent Winter Camping | Building a Traditional Swedish Pulk - YouTube .You can also see a more in-depth film about Segebadenpulkan's production of both sledding harnesses and canopies. Both historically but also in the present  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCalmTzMnggI7QR0p421W-xA  There you can also watch Erik's other films where he logs a log house by hand and with old techniques.

This is how it works:

Build your own sledge:
For two days, you build your own sledge, from start to finish, under the guidance of our course leader. We start at 08.00 day 1 which will be an eventful day where there will be steam and milling in the now 90 year old machines. We have lunch at a nice local restaurant and coffee is served in the morning and afternoon. The sledge continuously takes shape and we end the day at 17.00 with tar in it. We start day 2 at 09.00 and it will be a little calmer adg. We have the wooden details on the sledge ready and it has dried overnight in our special tar sauna. We finish the last details and assemble the hemp rope at the back, fittings and put the canopy there, then the sledge is ready. A lunch is also offered on day two and we end the course at 14.00.

Number of participants:
Since there are many steps in the production process we will arrange small groups with a maximum of 2 sledges at each occasion. Each sledding manufacturer can bring 1 friend/partner. The group can consist of a maximum of 4 people + a supervisor.

Choice of sledge model:
You can choose to build a smaller or a larger sledge. Read about both models further down on this page, then choose  what model you want to build in the registration form above (Book here). You can change your choice on the spot if you wish when you see the models.

Price:
Construction of the big sledge: 10,000 SEK
Construction of the small sledge: 9,000 SEK
Fellow traveler: 1,000 SEK

Payment:
When you have paid the registration fee, you will receive a confirmation via email that you have received your place. If you have to cancel for any reason, we will again pay 80% of the amount.

A welcome letter is then sent separately to your mej.

Manufacturing takes 2 full days. You will do these steps with our tutorial:

  • Bend various birch details in the now 90-year-old machines.
  • Mount these in a special mounting table that is also load-old.
  • Polish the sledge on a tape plaster and finer details by hand.
  • Tar the sleds in our special tar sauna with Swedish tar from Pajala. Tar smells good, but feel free to bring soft clothes.
  • Install Hemp rope at the back and install Segebadenpulkan's plate emblem at the front.
  • Assemble the coat of your choice.
  • Install canopy that was fastened with leather straps from Tärnsjö tannery.
  • A simpler training on the maintenance and care of sledding.
  • We will be present throughout the production and at the same time will tell the story of Segebaden.

Towing device:
When the sledge is complete, we will suggest a towing device that is best for you. We have towing devices for both humans and dogs.

Since we are involved in the production, you have a 25-year warranty on wooden parts. The same as we have on our other sledges.

The staff speaks fluent English, regarding other languages we look for the best solution and arrange an interpreter if available (at a small cost).

Detailed information about large and small sledges:

The big sledge:
T1 / Bp has a length of 124 cm, a width of 47 cm and a packing volume of 220 liters. The chapel is waterproof. Weight about 6-7 kg. Packing weight has no upper limit. This sledge is suitable for you who are going on tours of 1-7 days with tents and packing for one person. Or take your child on day trips. It is an all-round sledge that goes well in all bowls. This is also the most common of all the Segebaden sledge models.

The small sledge:
Bp mini has a length of 90 cm, a width of 40 cm and a packing volume of 80 liters. The chapel is waterproof. Wild about 4-5 kg. Packing weight has no upper limit. Bp mini is small and compact suitable for day trips or for a child to pull who wants to help. Also suitable for a small dog who would like to help master or mistress to pull a sled. It is so easy that even small dogs (12-16 kg) such as Drever, Beagle m.m. able to pull. It's too small for weekly trips - unless your partner has most of the packing in their sled.
